Your body aches and your knees are weak, but you pull the mooring rope with all your strength. You pull like it is the last thing you will ever have to pull. You are Jean Valjean, a prisoner of the French government. It's been nineteen years since your incarceration, and today is the day of your release. For nineteen years, you've thought of nothing but freedom. Now, finally, it is coming to pass.
On a stone pathway overhead, a jacketed figure is pacing with his hands behind his back. A tricorne hat sits atop his head. He is visibly upset, and appears to be looking directly at you.
"Look down!", comes a muffled voice from behind you. "Look down. That's the inspector. Don't look him in the eye."
Though your heart is filled with excitement at your impending release, in your mind you cannot help but fear the fact that you will soon come face to face with this intimidating inspector.
